Introduction to Computer Science with CodeCombat
24

Description

CodeCombat is a browser-based role-playing game that teaches the programming languages Javascript and Python, as well as the fundamentals of computer science. The game is designed such that in order to advance through the game’s levels, players must prove their knowledge by writing code in Javascript or Python. Codecombat includes both single-player and multi-player components, and is targeted at a secondary school audience.  The game was positively reviewed by PC Magazine, although the reviewer noted that the game content was somewhat similar to a “generic casual browser game” and “mostly unmemorable”. In January 2014, CodeCombat made their software open source, and released a level editor so that users could create their own game content.

About CodeCombat – CodeCombat is a startup educational gaming company in San Francisco, California. It makes a browser-based video game that teaches players the skills of computer programming. CodeCombat was founded in February, 2013 by George Saines, Scott Erickson, and Nick Winter, who had previously developed the language-learning application Skritter. In 2014, the company received backing from the seed stage venture capital firm Y Combinator. According to CodeCombat, its products are free, and the company plans to make money from recruiting bonuses by referring skilled players to software companies. However, CodeCombat has introduced a monthly paid subscription that gives access to additional game content.
